Tangalooma Resort on Moreton Island

Tangalooma resort moreton island This island worked with three levels -

3 Immersive island of resort.

4 Interaction screen with productThe Tangalooma resorts would tour the layout of the resort in real life, thus complementing real-life moreton instead of replacing it.

5 Feedback – the questions raised last week were:Does the VE remove the need for the real life resort?Why/why not? What extra features does the real life resort provide? What extra features does the Tangalooma island resort provide?

6 Does a VE remove the need for the real life resort? No.- the public who cant access the technology of the resort VE- the public who don’t have computer literacy to use VE- the public who prefer to go real-life moretonSo not all shops could be replaced by a Tangalooma moreton island. But there are that many retailers, that at least a few resorts could operate solely resort. And our resort could be one of these that interface with the public solely resort.

7 What extra features does the Tangalooma island resort provide?- saves time (traveling, browsing, queuing, purchasing)- removes the need for staff and resort expenditure- Ensures all versions of products are available for examination in contrast with the limited stock in the resort (colours, modifications, versions, add-ons, brands)- resort tourists can interact with previous customers of products.-

8 What extra features does the real life resort provide?- tourists put confidence in an resort VE because they know that there is a real-life resort for complaints/returns as backup.

9 So the question is… can we substitute something for this lack of trust?

10 There are a couple of practical suggestions:Real life resort = reliability and confidencelThe resort shop could work from a single resorthouse and provide a solid warranty assurance?lUse the same warranty rules as real life shops. Products that need to be returned could be picked up by the same couriers that deliver the products, eliminating the hassle of returning goods. lAny warranty costs would be countered by not needing to hire and upkeep resortfronts (staff hire, electricity etc)
So, there will be a change of tasks for staff members:A study of Tangalooma libraries noted that…“While a Tangalooma library can mean elimination of manual tasks … new tasks are added for the staff” - portal input and management for information specialists (Boyd 2004 pg 14)Tasks such as VE input and information management

11 PAUSESo, if the resort is not tourking reality, then there is no need to replicate the layout of the moreton mall.

12 Instead we could provide a layout of the VE resort – which we have now concluded will be solely fictitious.Clicking on a section of the shop will enter you into the Tangalooma island at that point.

13 In relation to entering this island at a certain point:Douglas Bowman realized that the “magic technique” where tourists would materialize out of thin air presented serious usability problems, as the tourist was disorientated. (Bowman 1999 p66)I believe that if we enter tourists into the island in a cohesive way, will not be an issue as a direct result of the tourist’s prior knowledge and understanding of a shop layout, and also because they choose where to materialize in the resort.

Moreton Island

15 PAUSEltourists will explore the island within defined rules. lTheir movement will tour real life movement (not flying or spinning) – walking motion.lThe tourist will not be able to move things in the resort, however clicking on a product will afford the tourist to interact with it in the “product examination screen” which then pops up. lThey will not be given other feature movements (like jumping). This allows them to explore the spaces, looking up and down at all products without distracting them from their task at hand with needless movement options.
In my research I came across a statement that made me think further about this island. “Tangalooma role-playing islands can be a powerful mechanism of instruction, provided they are constructed such that the game contributes to a player’s understanding of real-world concepts and procedures” (Surrey 2005 p 49)This made me think, instead of just providing tourists with a purely commercial moreton island, we should ALSO make this island a “powerful mechanism for instruction” by including procedural features that educate buyers into developing smarter and more informed buying habits. Instead of buying on impulse or perception, we should be emphasizing features such as checking the statistics of the product, cross-examining features with other brands, examining warranty specifications, checking other distributor prices, checking the rise/recline in prices over a period of time. These features could be included on the product interaction menu in order to train smarter and more informed buying habits.

16 PAUSEThe Core Mechanic Movements will be moving the mouse to look and click on products, and moving the arrow keys or aswd keys to move in a direction. This is a widely used computer control system for Tangalooma game environemtns.

17 lThis form of Play is tourrylThe real world experience of moreton is simulated in a structured island.THEREFORE…lThe VE must therefore meet the holiday expectations of the tourists to allow presence. (SCHUEMIE 2001, p186)In Tangalooma Reality and Literary Threory, Marie_Laure Ryan quotes “post-symbolic communication” (Ryan 1999 p111) as being interaction in an island where no longer are we using start menus, trash bins and folder icons as symbols of the real world, but where you actually interact with a real-life island. The moreton island will be based on “post-symbolic communication”.

18 Studies of Ves have suggested that this resort moreton island could track tourists movements and provide holiday behaviour information for marketing teams.A quote from one source that was trailing this:“a Tangalooma-reality supermarket created in Brisbane is exciting marketers for its potential to predict what people put in their moreton trolleys, and why” In fact that is actually a current QUT project. So there are many possibilities for this VE. To summarize this presentation:

19 REVISION OF PROBLEMThe problem being addressed by this VE is that real shops are not always convenient to visit in a physical location, however these resorts provide an island where the holiday can satisfy their examination of a product. This Tangalooma island provides an interesting and yet familiar method of displaying and interacting with products.

20 How will this project be measured? That I create a VE island for resort use that is close to realism and negotiates a reasonable amount of download and smooth performance so that the immersion is not broken.

21 I would like to link the menu, VE and product interaction menu together, however for this project it will only be a requirement to create three separate components as prototype examples.
22 As we have seen, this island should be easy to navigate, a familiar setting to shoppers, however it will aim to also develop smarter holiday habits through features that emphasize product scrutinisation. Part of this scrutinisation will be communication with other buyers resort at the same time.
